Mother Follins was born November 8, 1917. She was the only daughter and three brothers born to Peter and Lou Ella Lewis in Natchitoches, Louisiana. She attended school in Natchitoches where she also joined the First Baptist Church. She came to Bakersfield, California during the late forties where she became a resident until her death. While living in Bakersfield she met Willie Follins, their courtship grew into a strong love affair. On October 17, 1966 they were united in marriage in Las Vegas, Nevada. They became one. Usually when you saw one you would see the other. Remembering their marriage vows, Through sickness and health until death doeth us apart, Brother Follins devotedly cared for Mother Follins all during her three years of illness. During the sixties she was one of the first people to begin working for the Target Area Program (TAP). In 1972 she began working for the Bakersfield City School District, where she spent the next fifteen years working as a teachers aide at Bessie Owens and McKinley Elementary schools until her retirement. After retirement she volunteered her time with the Golden Empire Gleaners. In 1981 she united with St. Emmanuel Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Robert Bonner. There she was actively involved in the Mission Department, Bible Class and Prayer Meeting. Mother Follins was also faithfully involved with the San Joaquin Missionary District Association W.M.U. and was a member of the National Council of Negro Women. On February 4, 2004 she and her husband transferred their membership to St. Peter R.C.C.M. Church under the guidance of Pastor O.J. Anthony. Mother Follins served faithfully until her illness. She enjoyed reading her Bible and going fishing with her husband. Most of her immediate family members have preceded her in death. Early Tuesday morning, February 8, 2006, the Lord relieved her of all pain and suffering. She leaves to celebrate her home going her devoted husband, Willie Follins; two stepchildren, Willie Dewitt Follins and wife, Inga of Sierra Vista, Arizona, and Barbara Follins Sneed and husband, Felton of West Monroe, Louisiana; four grandchildren; a cousin, L.V.
