Zumm Fraser Mar. 28, 1923 - Dec. 16, 2005 A memorial service will be held at St. Francis Catholic Church in Bakersfield on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at 2PM. Fran was born in Oakland, CA to John and Mary Fraser on March 28, 1923. He attended parochial school in Oakland and graduated from St. Elizabeths High School in 1940. With the onset of WWII, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served his country in the Pacific Theatre including campaigns at Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands. Following his discharge from the service, Fran attended San Francisco State University earning Bachelors and Masters degrees in Biology. While attending college, Fran met the love of his life, Dorothy Livingston, who he married the day after his graduation on June 9, 1951. Fran and Dorothy moved to Bakersfield in 1953 to begin his new job as a biology teacher at Bakersfield High School. He continued his own science education through summer study programs at the University of Indiana and Marquette University, as well as a full academic year at the University of Oregon. In addition to his teaching duties, he enjoyed coaching Driller golf and football. Fran was part of the teaching staff that opened Highland High School in 1970 where he taught biology and was science department chairman. Fran retired from teaching in 1984. Fran enjoyed many interests including fishing, traveling, reading, gardening, cooking, completing the daily crossword puzzle and restoring classic cars. He was a 30 year member of the Bakersfield Model A Ford Club. In 1965, he began construction on his cabin on Little Grass Valley Lake in Northern California. His cabin became his second home and is treasured and loved by his family today. Fran was preceded in death by his parents, and daughter Mary Lynn Fraser. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, son and daughter-in-law Greg and Teri Fraser of Fresno, CA, son Gary Boomer Fraser of Bakersfield, CA, and grandchildren Andrew, Katie, and Molly Fraser of Fresno, CA. He is also survived by his six siblings, brother Paul and sister-in-law Lois Fraser of San Leandro, CA, sister Rita and brother-in-law James Henry of Stockton, CA, brother Donald Fraser of Huntington Beach, CA, sister Sr. Rita Francis of Martinez, CA, sister Rosa Varney of Mariposa, CA, sister Phyllis Thompson of San Mateo, CA, sister-in-law LaVerne Livingston of Sonoma, CA, brother-in-law John Livingston of Walnut Creek,CA and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Francis Fraser Scholarship Fund c/o Highland High School, 2900 Royal Scotts Way, Bakersfield, CA 93306.
