The family moved to Southern California in 1924. During the Depression they went north to Chico and had a small farm. Laila graduated from Chico State University and went into teaching. She earned an additional degree in music and taught music in the Fresno area. In the early forties she was employed by the Bakersfield City School District where she taught and was a counselor for almost 40 years. Laila enjoyed working with young people and devoted many extra hours to putting on school plays and directing the Glee Club. Many of her students maintained contact with her through the years. After retirement, Laila enjoyed traveling and working on her familys genealogy. She wrote a book on the Fulkerson family and helped track the backgrounds of many friends. She is survived by her son, Nelson Thompson; daughter, Maude Taylor; grandchildren, John, James, Kristina, Roland and William; three great- grandchildren and nephew, James Fulkerson of Wyoming; her special friend and caregiver, Joe Peralta.
