Gibson Taft today mourns the passing of a longtime resident and a member of the greatest generation who help win the war and build the Westside into a thriving community in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Graveside services for William Bill M. Gibson will be held Tuesday at Taft Cemetery at 2 p.m. Mr. Gibson, 85, died last Friday (*06 January 2006) at a Bakersfield hospital after a short illness. A long-time Taft resident, Mr. Gibson worked for Standard Oil, now known as Chevron, on the Westside for 31 years before retiring in 1978. He worked at the 11-C, Elk Hills, Cymric, and virtually every other location controlled by Standard Oil. After retirement, Bill, as he was known by his friends, became an avid golfer and once won the Buena Vista mens club championship. Say the words lets tee it up and Bill was on the course. His last round was a week to the day of his death when he shot a 90. He was also a tournament bowler and participated in many local, regional and state tournaments, and claimed several team and individual championships. As a young man he enjoyed fly fishing and counted trout fishing among his favorites. He also hunted quail in his younger days and was a marksman, winning several turkey shoots in Taft. Bill came to Taft with the U.S. Army Air Corps when he was stationed at Gardner Field where he met his lovely bride, Beatrice Cameron, in 1942. Bill will always be remembered as a family man first and was called a real mans man by many of his friends. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bea, of Taft; a daughter, Judy Caudell, of Bakersfield and her husband John; his son, John, and his wife, Kathy Gibson, of Bakersfield; his granddaughter, Julie Currie, and her husband, Russell, of New York City; grandson, John Caudell, of San Luis Obispo; grandson, Cameron Gibson, and granddaughter, Erika Gibson, of Bakersfield; and his sister, Lola Mae Purdue, of Taft, as well as three sisters-in-law and many beloved nieces and nephews. Bill was extremely proud of his grandchildren. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 1/8/2006.
