Bena attended Potomac Elementary School, Lincoln Junior High, and East Bakersfield High School where she graduated in June 1973. Immediately after graduation Bena began working at Bakersfield College as a clerk. She remained with the college for over 25 years, working in the Admissions and Records and Business Departments, before retiring in 2001. At an early age, Bena joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late H.A. Green. In 2000, Bena joined Solid Rock Baptist Church where she served as Church Secretary and worked faithfully with the youth, Vacation Bible School, and Sunday School departments. Bena was quite active in the community as well. She was involved in a number of local organizations and events including Relay for Life, the Golden Empire Tennis Association, the American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, and she also served as Assistant Director of the local Dress for Success Organization for three years. Bena was preceded in death by her mother, Hilda Godbolt; her father, Eddie Wells; grandparents, Jewel and Tommie Riley; two uncles, Bob Godbolt and Tommy Godbolt; an aunt, Elizabeth Ann Godbolt; and a nephew, Michael Anthony Wells. She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her home- going a devoted husband, Jethro (Buddy) Sutton; a daughter, Mikiba Ward; a cousin she raised as her own daughter, Sheila Howard; two brothers, Eddie Michael Wells and Lee Anthony Hogg; aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and countless friends. Bena will always be remembered for her smile, creativity, and sweet spirit. We will never forget how easy she was to talk to, her irresistible affection for butterflies, and how much she loved life. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, and friend to many. She will be truly missed. Celebrate her life and home-going with us on Mon., Nov. 7th at 10:00a.m. at Mt.
