Survived by her husband of 62 years Edward L. Golden; Sister: Betty Ann Callaway; Children: William Lee Golden, his wife Sharon, Bonnie Golden Bowles, her husband Ray, and Debbie Golden; Cousin: Paul Adkisson; Niece: Penny Ripley, her husband Glenn; Grandchildren: Marci and Julie Golden, Ryan, wife Lucy and Katie Samarripas; Great granddaughter: Kaylynn Golden. Born at home April 16, 1925, in Maricopa, California. She graduated from Kern County Union High School in 1943 when young people went directly into the workforce while the men were gone fighting WWII. After graduation, she went to work at the Lockheed sub-assembly plant here in Bakersfield building B-17's. She met Ed Golden on a blind date in April, 1943. They were married in the First Methodist Church, Little Chapel of Sacred Memories in Bakersfield on November 21, 1943. War and Navy assignments caused them to wait 6 years to have their first child, William Lee Golden. Two years later came Bonnie Louise Golden whose middle name honors Mae's friend Louise, who arranged the blind date where she met Ed. Debbie Ann Golden was born in 1954, making the family complete. In 1959, Ed was transferred to Pearl Harbor, before Hawaii had become a state. That two-year long assignment was where Mae discovered and cultivated her lifelong love and passion for all things Hawaiian. Ed retired later after serving in the Navy for 20 years. Mae immersed herself in being room mother, active PTA member, church member and auxiliary member (pink lady) for Memorial Hospital for over 20 years and "MOM" to all of the friends of Bill, Bonnie and Debbie plus exchange students. Ed's second career as a school teacher allowed for extended camping trips every summer. Mae always looked forward to summers and camping for the entire month of August, hosting campfires and feeding hordes of hungry boyfriends, girlfriends and scout leaders from Camp Kern on the weekends. To everyone she was "Mom" or "Mrs. G." Her other love was hosting foreign exchange students. Several foreign exchange students lived in our home for up to a year at a time and attended high school while learning what it was like to live in a real American family. Mae and Ed were always thrilled to hear from their "children" all around the world. Being a grandmother, traveling in their motor home and taking occasional trips to Hawaii were the pleasures of Mae's "retirement years". She became a Lakers fan several years ago just so "she could have a meaningful conversation with her grandson Ryan." When she realized her physical health was failing in her later years, she intentionally kept her mind sharp with crossword puzzles and cryptograms. Mae's own words sum up her life best: "We have had such a full life of family, friends, young people and love!" And our feelings about her are summed up in her granddaughter Katie's words of farewell: "Thank you Grandma for loving us all!" God has definitely blessed us all, MOM! Memorial Service scheduled for Thursday, March 23, 2006 11:30 a.m. First United Methodist Church, 4600 Stockdale Hwy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
