A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, April 9, 2005, at 1:00 p.m., in Bakersfield at Union Cemetery. Alma was born at home in Oplin, Texas, on July 22, 1908, to William Jay and Lenora Estella Ray Glenn. She was the fourth of five children. They moved from Texas to Bakersfield when she was 9 years old. She attended Williams School, Washington School and Kern County Union High School before working as a telephone operator for American Telephone and Telegraph from 1926 1941. In later years she also worked in the kitchens of many of Bakersfields elementary schools. Alma met Homer Sledge in Bakersfield, they married in 1929 and enjoyed 59 years of marriage before he passed away in 1988. Alma loved life and loved people and was a devoted member of Eastern Star since 1949, and served as an officer every year until 1999, then again in 2001. She was very proud that she had earned her 50-year pin and the Rob Morris Service Award. She also belonged to Ladies Oriental Shrine and volunteered for many years for American Cancer Societys Cancer Dressing Station. She always said it was her family, her organizations and her many friends that kept her going and contributed to her long life. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was always making things for family and friends. Alma is survived by her daughter, Judy Marshall and husband, Roger of San Luis Obispo; four grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, Lori Snyder and husband, Ross and Devin and Garrett of Lincoln, CA, Brenda Serrano and Steven and Jessica of Simi Valley, Craig Marshall and wife, Sherri and Skylar and Sierra of Paso Robles and Todd Marshall and wife, Lisa and Spencer, Hunter and Adelina Grace of Los Osos.
