Nickel Jr. Services: Sat., Aug. 7, 11 a.m. George Wilmarth Nickel, Jr. Visionary, Developer, great-grandson of the Cattle King Henry Miller, founder of Miller & Lux died in Bakersfield, August 3, 2004. George Wilmarth Nickel, Jr. was born in San Francisco on November 18, 1917 to George and Ernestine (McNear) Nickel. George graduated from high school in Palo Alto and the University of California Berkeley in 1938. He married Charlotte Davidson (deceased 11/1954) in 1940. They raised their 5 children in Los Banos, CA. He married Adele Rock Selfridge in 1955, who had 3 children. Together they raised their 8 children in Los Banos. George W. Nickel, Jr. was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Sally Mein, Mary Lombardi and brother, John Beverly Nickel and his youngest son, Henry Miller Nickel. After graduation from UC Berkeley, George began his long career with the family business, Miller & Lux. A lover of the land and a man of many dreams, he successfully fulfilled many of these dreams in the fields of agriculture, real estate, water developments and hydroelectric power. After the dissolution of Miller & Lux in 1964, he moved to Bakersfield and continued the pursuit of his career in land and water development in Kern, Merced, Fresno and Kings Counties. He served on numerous water district boards and was appointed to the State Bureau of Reclamation by Governor Pat Brown. He was a pilot, an avid hunter, a life long competitor in tennis, golf, dominoes and bridge. He loved water sports and was known to take a dip in the Kern River and Pacific Ocean in December. George was a member of many clubs including Rotary, the Pacific Union Club in San Francisco, the Petroleum Club, the Bakersfield Country Club, the Sutter Club in Sacramento, San Francisco Country Club and Rio Bravo Country Club. A devoted father of 8, grandfather of 16, great-grandfather of 10, George will be celebrated at a Memorial on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the family home on the Rio Bravo Ranch on Rancheria Road. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kern County Museum Agriculture and Water Exhibition and CALM in Bakersfield or the charity of your choice.
