Tobias June 30, 1925 August 5, 2004 Services: Monday, Aug. 9, 11 a.m. On August 5th Bettie Tobias passed away leaving behind so many that she touched in her elegant and gracious way. She was born Bettie Ann McConnell in Canton, Ohio, June 20, 1925 where she spent her early childhood. At age 16 she moved to Bakersfield attending East Bakersfield High and graduating in 1943. While attending Woodbury College in Los Angeles, Bettie met Bill Tobias who had just returned from service in the Philippines during World War II. They were married in 1946 and lived in Pasadena for a few years before moving back to Bakersfield. Bettie helped with her husbands insurance business at State Farm while raising three children. She was also active in the Ladies Optimist Club at that time. After her children had grown and left home, Bettie pursued her own career eventually becoming manager of Consumer Credit Counselors of Bakersfield. After retiring she remained active doing accounting work for the Sunshine Center Pre-School and volunteer work for Community Connection for Childcare. That was what she did; but it was who she was that made her special. Independent and strong she possessed a wonderful sense of humor and a compassionate heart. She placed always family first and her dear friends not far behind. Those that knew her loved her. Family members include son, Scott Tobias and his wife, Darlene; daughters, Claudia and her husband, Bob Ezell and Janet and her husband, Scott Shaw; granddaughters, Caneel, Lonnie, Taylor and Johnnie and grandsons, Aaron and Kevin. Services will be held Monday, August 9, 2004, 11 a.m., at First Church of Religious Science, 222 Eureka St. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hoffman Hospice and ask in lieu of flowers that donations be made to that organization.
