Dr. Don Shelton will officiate at the services. Erma Toler was born in Kansas City, Kansas on January 15, 1913, the only child of Hazel and Tom Porter. The family moved to Kansas City, Missouri where Erma graduated from high school and Kansas City Teachers College. She taught in the public schools of Kansas City until her marriage to Tom in 1937. She took additional courses from Phillips Graduate Seminary in Enid, Oklahoma. Her professional career as a ministers wife spanned 67 years and she served in this capacity with great skill and compassion. Her roles in the church included serving the Christian Womens Fellowship of the Christian Churches in Missouri, President of Christian Womens Fellowships of both Northern and Southern California, Trustee of Northern California Christian Church homes and Board Member of the California Christian Home of Rosemead, California. She also served a number of years on the Board of the National Christian Womens Fellowship in Indianapolis, Indiana. As an activist, she assisted in the integration of the YWCA of St. Joseph, Missouri during the years she lived in that city. She was a faithful member of the OX Chapel of PEO and was often called on to plan and lead special womens events. She happily and conscientiously served as an Elder of the First Christian Church in Bakersfield. Among many special joys she relished her role as mentor to her two grandsons, often traveling with them throughout the world. Another such joy was many years of travel with Tom; travels which took them to Israel, Egypt, Russia, the Balkans, Danube River, China, Australia, New Zealand, and several journeys through Europe and the British Isles. In addition to the recent death of her husband, Tom, Erma was preceded in death by her daughter, Martha Sue. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Norwood and her husband, Tom; grandsons, Tom and Jeff; her special cousin (the sister she never had), Margaret Renz Kennicutt, and many other family and friends. Her sense of justice and right will be missed. Greenlawn Mortuary Funeral Directors Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
