Jim was born in Muldrow, Oklahoma on January 28, 1936 to Jessie (Chitwood-Spencer) and Henry C. Newman. He retired from the California Correctional Institution in 1998, after a 17 year career as a Correctional Officer and a highly respected Correctional Counselor. He served in the United States Air Force for four years, mostly in the remote sections of Alaska. Prior to beginning his career in state corrections, Jim was well known in Bakersfield due to his involvement in the Alcohol/Drug treatment community and his employment with the Sheriffs Department. He was a past member of the Kern County Alcohol Advisory Board, and former Director of Carter Hall, a treatment home for women. Jim worked for the Kern County Sheriffs Department as a dispatcher in Mojave and later as the court liaison for the Kern County Alcohol Treatment Program, making sentence recommendations to the court. He was an accomplished pilot and flight instructor for many years, having just received his 40 year membership pin from AOPA. He was a proud member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, and 32nd degree Mason in the Tehachapi Lodge. Jim was an avid genealogist, serving as a volunteer at the local LDS Genealogy Library for many, many years despite the fact he was not a member of the church. His greatest pleasure in life was his family and especially his children and grandchildren. Abigail, his youngest daughter, especially brightened his life for the past 12 years. Preceding him in death was his father, sister, Brenda Newman, step-father, Monroe Sarge Dunn and two sons, James and Morgan. He is survived by his mother, Jessie F. Dunn; daughters, Lisa Stradley and Abigail Newman; sons, Noel, Sean, Justin, Parker and Joel Newman, sister, Mary E. Hill and brother, Lee C. Newman. He is also survived by grandchildren, Tonacey and Cindy Newman, Tamara and Scott Stradley, and Riley Newman and many other family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. at Wood Family Funeral Service Chapel, 321 West F Street, Tehachapi. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hoffmann Hospice in Jims memory. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
