Webster Services: Wed., Sept. 1, 1 p.m. Services will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Blvd., Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. John was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1918, the youngest of five children. He attended Idaho State University where he was National Collegiate Light Heavyweight Boxing Champion before leaving to become a Pennsylvania State Policeman. From the State Police, John enlisted in the Army serving in the WWII European effort. He returned after honorable discharge to Pennsylvania to become the Chief of Police in Scottsdale. Over the next years, John was recruited by the Air Force as an officer, finished his degree and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 1964. John went on to receive a PHD in Criminology from UC Berkeley. He was a professor at The University of Illinois in Chicago from 1968 to 1974 and then moved to Bakersfield. John was a professor at California State University, Bakersfield until his retirement in 1990. A member of MOAA, American Legion Post 26, and The Disabled American Vets, John is survived by his wife, Jan; his four children, Michaela, Antonia and husband, Robert, Matt and wife, Stacie, and Tom; his grandchidlren, Joseph and Michael. John was a gentleman and man of principle all his life. On the behalf of others, John took on impossible fights with no thought of personal gain and no regard for personal consequence. With an unshakable belief in the goodness of people, John was a true testament to the depth and generosity of the human spirit. John also took care of those around him. Always friendly and charming, he was well liked by everyone and brought much happiness into the world. As an adventurer, he traveled around the world many times and lived a life few others could imagine. He was an athlete as well, from boxing and jogging to judo and bicycle riding, he always believed in good health. He was a wonderful father and loving and caring husband. John was a true giant who carried many people on his shoulders and taught many others how to walk on their own.
