He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise in 1958; his daughter, Patricia; brother, Robert; and sister, Margaret. His longtime friend and companion, Charlotte Amour also preceded him in death in 1995. He is survived by his son, Michael, a Cardiologist in Sacramento, and his wife, Paula; and grandchildren, Stephen Davis, James Davis, Julie Dudzik and Susan Shiflett; his sister, Betty Paulin and 8 great-grandchildren; and Charlottes son, August Amour. Lewis, affectionately known as Doc, moved to McFarland in 1914, then to Bakersfield, where he graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1925. Doc attended one semester at Bakersfield Junior College before he fulfilled his lifelong dream of enrolling at USC in 1926. He worked his way through college and USC Dental School delivering messages on his motorcycle for Red Arrow Messenger Service. Riding motorcycles remained a lifelong passion, which continued until the remarkable age of 92. A 1931 graduate of USC Dental School, he practived in Bakersfield until the age of 80. He was a loyal lifelong supporter of the Dental School at USC. His dental practice was interrupted during World War II when he joined the Army as a Major. He was stationed first at Ford Ord and then spent almost two years in the South Pacific with the U.S. Army Dental Corps where he participated in the invasion of the Philippines. Doc chronicled war in the Pacific through letters featured in the Bakersfield Californian. He had a great passion for life and was very involved in many community organizations and activities. He served as President of the Kern County Dental Society, which he helped found and was President in 1934 and again in 1948. He was a member of the 20-30 Club, Civitans, Optimists, Kiwanis, Rotary and Masons. He was a member of Stockdale Country Club from 1937 to 1994. At the time of his resignation he proudly held the distinction of having held the longest continuous membership. Doc had innumerable friends at Stockdale and particularly enjoyed the Thursday mens golf/dinner/and cards afterward, as well as his buddy trips to Carmel and Pala Mesa. He helped found the Junior Golf Program at Stockdale and introduced the game to his son, Mike, which resulted in unforgettable memories of playing golf countless times together. As all his family and friends were aware, Doc was a passionate rooter for the USC Trojan Football team, and had season tickets for nearly 60 years. He and Charlotte shared a rabid passion for the Chicago White Sox. Doc will always be affectionately remembered for his passion and optimistic outlook on life, his loyalty to his friends, his dedication to his patients, and his love and generosity to his family. No visitation is scheduled. Greenlawn Mortuary Funeral Directors Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
