Jim was born in Muldrow, Okla. on Jan. 28, 1936, to Jessie (Chitwood-Spencer) and Henry C. Newman. He retired from the California Correctional Institution in 1998, after a 17-year career as a correctional officer and a highly respected correctional counselor. He served in the United States Air Force for four years, mostly in the remote sections of Alaska. Prior to beginning his career in state corrections, Jim served his beloved Tehachapi community as a deputy constable for the Tehachapi Judicial District. He then began his employment with the Kern County Sheriff's Department as a dispatcher in Mojave and later as the court liaison officer for the Kern County Alcohol Treatment Program, making sentence recommendations to the court. Also, he was well known in Bakersfield due to his involvement in the alcohol/drug treatment community. He was a past member of the Kern County Alcohol Advisory Board and former director of Carter Hall, a treatment home for women. Jim was an accomplished pilot and flight instructor for most of his life until he was "grounded" by diabetes. His biplane sat idle in the garage at his home on Mill Street for years and it was often a topic of conversation from passersby. He recently received his 40-year membership pin from Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association. Jim was a proud tribal member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, having personally met with every recent Principal Chief, beginning with Wilma Mankiller. He was a 32nd-degree Mason in the Tehachapi Lodge and an avid genealogist, serving as a volunteer at the local LDS genealogy library for many, many years, despite the fact that he was not a member of the church. A great storyteller, Jim kept his family and friends enthralled with the entertaining and humorous details of his adventure-filled life and loves. His greatest pleasure in life was his family. Abigail, his youngest daughter and buddy, was a bright star in his life for the past 12 years. Jim especially enjoyed meals in local restaurants with his children and grandchildren. He favored Henry's Café, where he loved to visit with Richard and Debbie Henry and was served by his favorite waitresses, Desiree, Kristi, Marietta, Nicole and Kasey. “Papa” was a very giving man and he touched so many lives with his generous spirit and loving ways. His family was blessed to have him in their lives. Jim is survived by his mother, Jessie F. Dunn; daughters, Lisa Stradley and Abigail Newman; sons, Noel (Yvette), Sean, Justin (Christy), Parker (Wendy) and Joel Newman; sister, Mary E. Hill and brother and sister-in-law, Lee and Sherry Newman. He is also survived by his eldest grandchildren, Tamara and Scott Stradley, whom he raised as his own, and other grandchildren, Riley Newman and Tonacey and Cindy Newman. He is also survived by his dear friends, the Stankorb family. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry C. Newman; sister, Brenda Newman; stepfather, Monroe "Sarge" Dunn; and two infant sons, James and Morgan. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Aug. 28, at Wood Family Funeral Service Chapel. Private interment was at Tehachapi Westside Cemetery until the new National Veterans Cemetery is completed off Highway 58 and his remains will be transferred at that time. Donations may be made to Hoffmann Hospice in Jim's memory. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to the deceased.
