Pat was born and reared in the small oil town, Taft, CA where she married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth E. Barnes whom she met in church. She went on to receive higher degrees in education with Pats career of 42 years covering much of California, as well as Japan and Puerto Rico. Of her many accomplishments during her career in education, she was noted for being one of the first five females to become a school superintendent in the state of California. In Marin County she was one of the founders of the Youth in Arts Program, and in Sonoma County she was a member of Santa Rosa West Rotary Club, where she served as the first female president of the club. She was a mentor and coach to many in the field of education, a role model to children. Her friends and family will remember her for her exquisite sense of taste and style. She had a zest for life and enjoyed entertaining, traveling, dancing, and spending time with family. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary, or any other Hallmark day. Pat was known for her magic touch with children and people in general. She was a loving wife and mother, devoted to her friends, family and faith. Pat was a strong-willed, determined woman, who after previously surviving two types of cancer, was determined to educate herself and others about PSP a rare neurodegenerative disorder that has no known cause, treatment or cure. During the progression of her illness, she moved to the Central Valley to be closer to immediate and extended family. In her last days, her family moved her into to her sons home, where her husband also resides, so she could receive home hospice care. She passed peacefully while surrounded by loved ones. Pat was survived by her husband of 56 years, Kenneth E. Barnes of Bakersfield, CA; son, Mark E. Barnes of Bakersfield, CA; daughter, Susanne (Barnes) McGavin of Petaluma, CA; sister, Billie Adams of Morro Bay, CA; brother, Jon Adams of Sanger, CA; and brother, Joe Adams of Taft, CA. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, nieces and nephews. At Pats request, no funeral or memorial service will be held. Her ashes will be scattered outside the Golden Gate Bridge. She requested that contributions be made to The Society for PSP, Woodholme Medical Building, Suite 515, 1838 Greene Tree Road, Baltimore, MD, 21208 so they can continue their research and education efforts. The family is being assisted by the Neptune Society of Central California, 661-325-3963 / 800-894-8882. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
