He was born in LaPorte City, Iowa on November 6, 1917, to parents, Patrick and Rose OBrien. After graduating high school, he served honorably in the U.S. Navy. Upon his return to civilian life, he settled in Southern California and began his career as a plumber and raised his family. He was a true role model to his sons and other youths in the YMCA. Bill, an avid golfer and runner, enjoyed life to the fullest. In his later years, he also dabbled in theater. Bill achieved a milestone 51 years of continuous sobriety through Alcoholics Anonymous an inspirational example of the message. Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, Bette Jo; his parents; and older brother, Edward. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lucille; sons, Pat, Terry, Mick and wife, Sylvia, Jim and wife, Mary; stepson, Steve Waterman; and stepdaughters, Debbie Beckers and Karen Murphy and husband, Eddie; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Bill also leaves a multitude of friends, deeply affected by his love, hugs, caring and sharing. His legacy is sure to carry on. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 11, 2004, at 2:00 p.m., at the Alano Club, 1001 34th Street, Bakersfield, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Alzheimers Assn.
