Binder, M.D. Jan. 4, 1940 Sept. 2, 2004 A Memorial service for Dr. William A. Binder will be held at St. Johns Lutheran Church (4500 Buena Vista Rd.) Thursday, September 9, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Dennis Hilken will officiate. William A. Binder was born January 4, 1940, to William and Hermine Binder in Chicago, Illinois. He passed away on Thursday, September 2, 2004, in Bakersfield, California with his family by his side. Dr. Binder graduated from Garces High School in 1957. He attended Bakersfield College from 1957 to 1960. He attended Creighton University from the fall of 1960 to 1961. In the fall of 1962, he enrolled at the UC Irvine Medical School. After graduating in 1966 from medical school, he began his internship at the Oakland Naval Hospital. Dr. Binder served our country in the U.S. Navy, from 1966 to 1972, serving aboard the USS Tanner (AGS-15) based in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in 1972. Subsequently, Dr. Binder completed his Dermatology Residency at Stanford University and in 1973 joined Dr. Robert Day in a dermatology practice in Bakersfield, California. Dr. Binder was a member of the Stanford University Alumni, UC Irvine Alumni, Physician America Society for Laser Surgery and Medicine, Pacific Dermatology Association, American Academy of Dermatology, Dermatology Foundation, Kern County Medical Society, the AMA and CMA. Not only was he a highly respected doctor in the community, but he was also a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather. Dr. William A. Binder is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cheary Binder; son, Michael Binder; daughter and son-in-law, Teri and Jake Sweeny; grandchildren, Nicholas, Jack and Brian Sweeny; mother-in-law, Mary Flanagan; brother, Robert Binder; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Holly and Furman Jones and their children, Christopher, Jason, and Michael; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rick and Ruth Robertson and their son, Luke; as well as numerous other extended family members and many friends. Dr. Binder loved his family, his patients and his staff more than words can say. He loved photography and was very talented with a camera. He also enjoyed collecting trains, watching movies, and playing with his grandchildren. Pappa, you will be missed. The family would like to extend a Special Thanks to Cheryl Burroughs for her loyalty, devotion, professionalism and friendship with Dr. Binder throughout the many years of his practice.
