She was 92. She married Earl Penny, Sr. on July 4, 1936. During the war years, she built B25 bombers at North American Aviation in Kansas City and later moved to Bakersfield in 1951. As a young girl, she became interested in quilting and began playing the piano at age 9. She was a local church organist for over 50 years and worked for the Bakersfield City School District until 1972. Earl Penny died in 1972 and in 1973, she married James Addison Arp, a local builder whose father built the first Bakersfield Californian building on Eye St. during the early 1900s. She collected antique furniture, dishes, sheet music, jewelry, and loved cats.. She was a member of the Republican Party, Bakersfield Womans Club, Symphony Associates and the Kern County Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She will be greatly missed. Her ancestors include Joeb Powell, a traveling circuit writer preacher in Oregon during the 1860s and John Powell, the first head of the U.S. Geological Survey in charge of all U.S. land grants west of the Rocky Mountains; Lake Powell is named after him. She is survived by three sisters, Garnet Westoff of Overland Park, KS, LaVaun Fletcher of Grandview, MO, and Georgia Madison of Edgewater, NJ; sons, Earl Penny and wife, June of Lakeside, CA, and Eldon Penny of Bakersfield, CA; grandchildren, Kristen Daniel of Santee, CA and Davey Dawson of El Cajon, CA; and great-great-grandchild, Jordan Daniel of Santee, CA. The memorial service will be held at St. Pauls Episcopal Church on Friday, September 10, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. Internment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery.
