Attended schools in Mojave and A.V. High in Lancaster, CA. Enlisted in the Army and assigned to the 5th Army Engineers in WWII. Was in S. & N. Africa and was in Italy on D-Day. He served on his first military funeral in Mojave in 1947 as Bugler for his school buddy and comrade. He joined Mojave VFW Post #3711, then transferred to Foothill VFW #7216, of which he is a life member and past Commander. American Legion #26 where he was very active in his younger days. Life member of DAV #157 and Charter member of Moose Lodge, Tehachapi. He participated with the Associated Veterans Funeral Detail and All Patriotic Programs as long as he was able. Survivors are sisters: Sarah, Pablo Pulos, Marcella, James A. Barclay of Bakersfield; daughters Linda Kates of Springfield, MO; Carla and Jim Brewer of Guam; Ellen and Larry Wiggins of Tehachapi, CA; Patricia Jo Mitchell of Portland, OR; and Sarah Jane Ferrell of Tulsa, OK. Deaceased are sisters Irene M. Fuller and Audrey M. Sanchez of San Bernardino, CA; brother Manuel S. Melendez of Bakersfield also buried at Vets Ntl. Cemetery in Riverside. He leaves many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great, and great-greats whom he loved dearly and they loved him in return. Also his many comrades and friends. Services are at the Kern River Mortuary Chapel, 1900 N. Chester at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004. Viewing at that time. Interment at Riverside Veterans Ntl. Cemetery.
