Sara is a native to the valley and a well-loved member of the Delano and Bakersfield Communities. She is survived by her husband Robert Farwell, their two sons, Robert and Christopher and their wives Sue and Mary respectively; her sisters, Evelyn Woody and Hazel Conley; granddaughter, Doe Starbird and by several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Born on August 11, 1920 in McFarland, Sara is the daughter of the late Ugo and Maria Sandrini and sister to the late Mary Piland, Lido Sandrini and Lester Sandrini. Sara attended Pond School and Delano High School. After graduating from Fresno State College in 1942, she taught at Pond School for four years. As the wife of Robert Farwell, Sara traveled far from her childhood in Delano. Sara met her husband in 1941 while he was a Flying Cadet in the Army Air Corps at Bakersfield. They were married on June 16, 1943 in the chapel at the B-17 Training Base in Dalhart, TX. After the war, Sara traveled extensively with her husband during his career in the U.S. Air Force and then later while he was a Project Manager with the Bechtel Corporation. While first protesting the moves that took her away from the home and the family she loved, Sara came to love the world and its many faces as she found dear friends in places as diverse as Tripoli, LIBYA, Houston, TX, Ankara, TURKEY, and Saudi Arabia. In each new location, she created a loving home for her family. Sara was also known as a brilliant hostess who enjoyed entertaining the Farwells many friends. Sara loved to read, and was always surrounded by books. Sara loved to cook for her family and friends, and enjoyed sharing the fruits and flowers of her well- tended garden. She was a loving wife and mother who devoted her life to her family. In addition to her brothers and sisters in California and Texas, Sara kept in touch with her extended family in Italy, where she visited many times. During her long illness, Sara has been lovingly attended by her husband and children, while in the care of Rosa and staff at Home Again, a long term care facility in Bakersfield. In her last days, she was compassionately assisted by the superb staff of the Hoffman Hospice program. Visitation will begin on Thurs., Sept. 16, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. at Delano Mortuary.
