Whiting Claimed by Death A short illness last night ended in death of Merle E. Whiting, 55, former manager of the Western Union telegraph office in Bakersfield and for several years city superintendent of the Postal Telegraph office in San Francisco. Mr. Whiting, who established residence at 1880 Pacific Street following his retirement four years ago, was the father of Lory M. Whiting, manager of Bakersfield office of Postal Telegraph. He passed away at a local hospital. A native of New York, Mr. Whiting came to Lindsay as a telegraph operator in 1908 and in 1918 was promoted to the managership of the Bakersfield Western Union office. After holding his position for five years, he went into business for himself as proprietor of the Bakersfield Magazine Agency. In 1927, Mr. Whiting accepted the position of city superintendent of the Postal Telegraph company in San Francisco, where he remained until retirement in 1933. He was active in lodge circles, being a past grand Satchem of the Red Men's lodge here. He leaves, besides his son Leroy M. Whiting, a widow, Mrs. Eva B. Whiting; three daughters, Mrs. Richard M. Burt and Mrs. Mary Jane Matthews, Bakersfield, and Mrs. William Orth, San Mateo; another son, Richard D. Whiting, Bakersfield; a brother, G. D. Whiting, Florida; a sister, Mrs. R. H. Pierce, Delavan, N.Y., and an uncle, Earl Whiting, New York. Arrangements are being completed for funeral services to be conducted at Payne & son chapel.
