Steve was the fifth boy in a family of nine children. When he was a young child, his parents moved the family to Cleveland, Ohio, where he grew up. He married his beloved high school sweetheart, Emily Bogesch, in 1937. They had two daughters, Maryann and Denise. He enlisted in the Ohio National Guard when he was 18 years old and served for four years when he was honorable discharged. He loved music, and was a drummer in a polka band. He worked for most of his life at TRW, Inc. as an inventory controller. In 1978, he retired and moved to Bakersfield, Ca. In his retirement, Steves favorite pastime was attending Garces High Schools football and basketball games with his close friend Dr. John Ritter. The passion in Steves life was serving as Sacristan at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. He faithfully served his church. If there was a need, he was there to serve. Because of this he was respected by priests and appreciated by the parishioners. As a result, he humbly received the highest recognition the Pope bestows upon a lay person, the Benemerenti, in 1996. Steve was preceded in death by his eight siblings and his beloved wife, Emily in 1985. He is survived by daughter, Denise Nielsen of Bakersfield and Maryann Eldridge and husband Frank of Kernville. Grandchildren are Adam Nielsen (whom he raised as his own), Lorri Chambers and husband Mark of Bodfish, Steve Eldridge, Linda White, and Lois Lee and husband Mike of Danville, CA. Great- grandchildren include Kristen, Matthew, Linsie and James. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Garces H.S. athletics or the Alzheimer Assn. Of Kern County. The family wishes to thank Dr. Vincent Madela and Emmanuel Convalescent Parkview for the wonderful care they provided.
