Nick remained in Bakersfield until 1982 when he moved to Clear Lake, California, to work for the Northern California Power Agency. He spent the majority of his adult life fishing, hiking, hunting, biking, sailing his boat, and camping. Nick was a gifted and talented guitar player and making music was his passion. Nick lived his life doing what he enjoyed most living an unencumbered, simple life. In doing so , he touched the lives of many people who loved him very much. Nick returned home to Bakersfield to spend his final days on earth with his family. Nick lost his battle with cancer on September 14, 2004 surrounded by family. He fought this terrible disease until the very end. Although Nick is gone and will be missed deeply, his incredible faith in God assures us we will see him again. Nick is survived by his father and step-mother, Kay and Kalyn Slayton; his mother and step-father, Jean and Loren Storni; his brothers, Chris and Jeff Slayton and sister-in-law, Lynette; his niece and nephews, Shelby, Tyler, Spencer and Nikolas Slayton; his step-sister, Nicole Cerotsky, and his little best friend, Dottie. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Charles Tam for his compassion and friendship, to Capi Sommer for the help above and beyond and to Sharon Hicks of Optimal Hospice, who filled Nicks last days with trust and tender loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his memory to Optimal Hospice Foundation, PO Box 80538, Bakersfield, California 93380-0538. Family and Friends are invited to a celebration of Nicks life at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2004 at the home of Kay and Kalyn Slayton in Bakersfield, California.
