"Tommie" Burch May 29, 1919 Sept. 22, 2004 Owen S. (Tommie) Burch, 85, passed away peacefully at home in Bakersfield, Wednesday evening. Tommie was born in Nova Scotia, Canada and later moved to Washington state; near Lake Chelan. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE during World War II and was very proud of her service to her country. She reached the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. Her duties included maintaining military aircraft in Memphis, TN where she met and very soon after married a handsome Marine, Harold F. (Skip) Burch. Three children and a move to California later, she called Bakersfield home since 1950. She worked for many years in the office of Dr. Lloyd H. Fox and later, for a short time for Dr. Romain Clerou. After her retirement, she did live in Murphys, CA from 1983 until 1996; after the death of Skip, when she returned to Bakersfield to be near her four grandchildren. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Andrews of Arnold, CA; her children, Thomas F. Burch and wife, Gail of Bakersfield, Susan L. Burch of Fairfield, CA, and John A. Burch and wife, Patsy of Bakersfield. She also leaves her beloved grandchildren, Heather Burch and Heidi Idoux; Phillip and Stephen Burch, all of Bakersfield. She worked hard, she lived simply, she touched many. May she rest in peace. Private services are planned at a later date in Murphys. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Tommies name to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 3150 Almaden Expressway Ste. 106, San Jose, CA 95118, or to a charity of your choice.
