A Memorial Service to follow at Shalimar Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Elizabeth Calhoun was born Sarah Elizabeth Johnson, a daughter of John Charles and Ida Josephine Johnson, on July 28, 1918 at Lake Nebagamon, Wisconsin. She was raised there on the family farm and educated at local schools, graduating in 1937 from Central High School in Duluth, Minnesota. She then attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and Mounds Midway School of Nursing in St. Paul, where she received her diploma as a Registered Nurse in 1943. After moving to Chicago, she received the Bachelor of Science degree from Roosevelt University in 1947. She also attended medical school at the University of Chicago. She was married to Donald Calhoun on February 3, 1945 at Chicago. Together they raised four sons and a daughter. In 1951, the family moved to Ethiopia where she and Don served for five years as missionaries of the Baptist General Conference. She worked as a nurse at rural health clinics. After returning to the United States, the family settled in California, first at Berkeley where Don continued his education and in 1963 at Bakersfield. She continued her nursing career during this time, working at various facilities including Herrick Memorial Hospital in Berkeley and Kern Medical Center for many years until her retirement in 1988. She was dedicated to her vocation, insisting on the highest standards of care, and was highly regarded by her medical colleagues. She was also an active member of Shalimar Baptist Church. She is remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother and loyal friend, generous to all who needed her assistance in any way. Elizabeth died at the age of 86 years after a brief illness on September 23, 2004, at her home in Bakersfield. She is survived by her husband, Donald of Bakersfield; by a daughter, Sarah of Oakland; by four sons, Jim of Oakland, Peter (Mary) of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, Jonathan of Bakersfield, and David of Aliso Viejo, California; by brothers, Ivan Johnson of Lake Nebagamon, Wisconsin and Sam (Marge) Johnson of Phoenix; by sisters, Ruth (Jim) Penton of Rosston, Texas, Esther Bitner of Superior, Wisconsin, Edithe Johnson of New Port Richie, Florida; and Deborah (Charles) Eid of Santa Rosa, California; by five grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ida Johnson; by an infant son, Stephen in 1949; by brothers, David and Paul in infancy, John and Philip; by a sister, Helga and an infant grandson.
