Evans, Ed. D. 8/23/1920 9/26/2004 Max A. Evans, 84, died peacefully at his home September 26 with his family at his side. The Rosary will be prayed at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 28 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Oildale. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 29 at Christ the King Catholic Church. Max was born August 23, 1920 in Winner, South Dakota. He spent five years in the Army Air Force attached to a B-17 squadron in the South Pacific. After the service he met his future wife, Regina Dwight, on the steps of the Iowa State Capitol building while both were applying for teaching jobs at the same school in Loriville. Less than a year later, on June 28, 1948, they married. (They recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.) That summer at Drake University in Iowa, Max began work on his Masters degree in education. In the spring of 49 Max and Regina hooked-up the trailer to the old Buick and headed for California. Max applied for a job in Kern County and joined the teaching staff at Kernville High School where the athletic field still bears his name. He and Regina loved those years and the close friendships they made with the Old Kernville Gang. It was also in Kernville where Michael, Stephen and Martin, the first three of their six boys were born. Max and family spent five summers in Los Angeles working toward his Doctorate at the University of Southern California. In 1955, Max transferred to North High School in Oildale. The births of Patrick, Christopher and Timothy completed the squad. He spent 35 great years as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Maxs warmth and good humor helped influence a generation of Oildale youth. It is amazing to the students who knew him that he never forgot their names or the details of their high school activities and beyond. Max was a long-time parishioner at Christ the King Catholic Church. He was an active member of the Mens Club, a faithful usher for forty years, and a daily communicant until his health declined. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 977. Maxs wife, sons, daughters-in-law, grand-children (Matthew, Catherine, John, Luke, Jesse, Peter, Zachary and Vanessa) and good friends will all miss him but are happy he is in Heaven probably taking his dog, Charlie, for a walk. In lieu of flowers, donations in Maxs honor may be made to Hoffmann Hospice, Christ the King Building Fund, and the Community Wellness Foundation at Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Center. Max is predeceased by his sister, Lucille Hansen. Maxs family extends a special thanks to Dr. T. Anthony Don Michael who kept Maxs heart and body as strong as his spirit for many years.
