During his youth, Charles and his family moved to Arvin, California. Charles was a graduate of Arvin High School Class of 1953. During that time, like many, Charles was drafted into the United States Army and held the rank of Private First Class. He served in Europe as a Light Vehicle Driver. After his Honorable Release from Active Duty he returned to the Arvin area to re-join his family. Charles met Janice Newton in 1955 and, after a tender romance, they wed in June 1956, committed to one another for life. Charles and Janice had two children, Charles Kent Porterfield and Susan lea Higgins, both of Bakersfield, CA. Charles was a prominent custom home builder in the Bakersfield, Tehachapi, and Bear Valley Springs area. He enjoyed building lifelong dreams for others to enjoy and it always showed in his custom design and craftsmanship. He loved spending his summer vacations with his family in the eastern Sierra town of Bridgeport, California, where he taught his children to trout fish at Robinson Creek. In his years to come, he would take his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren to that same trout stream to enjoy the Sierras as he did. Charles greatest gift to our world was the love and compassion he had for every child who entered into his life. He loved and cherished all children. During his retirement he worked as a school crossing guard for Juliet Thorner Elementary where he would purchase refresh-ments and goodies for the children on his route. During the final days of his life, his family witnessed the deepest love shared between Charles and his wife, Janice. It was this love and comfort that he carried with him in the final hours of his life. Charles and his family would like to thank Dr. Clerou, and Dr. Bouldoukian for the care and compassion they gave to him during his illness. Charles always felt these two fine men were his friends. Charles is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janice Porterfield; son, Kent Porterfield and wife, Lori Porterfield; and daughter, Susan Higgins. Charles had eight grandchildren, Sara Higgins, Jason Niccoli, Amanda Bernard, Brittany Porterfield, Cody Higgins, Jon Higgins, Trevor Porterfield, and Kayla Hinkle. Charles also had two great-grandchildren, Maddy Porterfield and Chase Higgins. Charles has one sister, Dorothy Daniels of Oklahoma. Charles is preceded in death by his mother, Ninah; his father, Henry Porterfield and his brothers, Bruce, Henry, Richard, Frank and Jim Porterfield. He Will Truly Be Missed. Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 10 a.m., in the Arvin Cemetery. Any other information needed can be supplied by Mission Family Mortuary 323-3339.
