She was the oldest of four children. She attended elementary school in Stronghurst and Proviso High in Chicago. After she graduated, Winnifred worked as a dental assistant until she followed her future husband, Joseph, to California in 1941. They were married in Las Vegas, December 7, 1941 and lived in Bakersfield where she remained the rest of her days. Winnifred was a homemaker and was active in Fairfax School PTA, serving as president and holding other administrative positions. She was very active in the Magunden 4-H Club and also the Bakersfield Model A Club. After Joes death she worked at the Fairfax School cafeteria until retiring at the age of 65. She lived alone until her passing at age 86, September 28, 2004. Mom was two months short of 87 years, a longlife, but scarcely a blink of an eye. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph E. Carter in 1969, sister, Helen Proctor; and daughter-in-law, Jean Brown Carter. Winnifred is survived by her five children, Joann Carter Hill and husband, Stan, Janis Carter Edmondson and husband, John, Roy Carter and wife, Linda all of Bakersfield, Clifford Carter and wife, Sandy of Shelton, Washington and Cheryl Carter Harwell and husband, Gary of Beaver, Utah; eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. We as a family would like to thank Odyssey Hospice and Penelope Edwards for their professional help and the congregation of Wesley Methodist Church where Winnifred was a member, for providing support to the family during these past days.
