Carolina passed on just as she always wanted, peacefully, in her sleep. She was 92 years old. Carolina was born in Nunon, Texas on November 22, 1911. She was one of seven children of Jesus and Margarita Mendoza. She moved with her family to Santa Ana, California while her parents were looking for work to support the family and remained there until the age of thirteen. Her parents, who followed crop work from town to town, finally settled down in Delano, CA, and bought a house when she was eighteen. At nineteen Carolina married Antonio Ramirez and bore her first child, a son. Nine years later, she divorced and married Mike Talamantez, with whom she had two boys and three girls. She remained married to Mr. Talamantez for ten years before setting out on her own to support and raise her family. Carolina loved dancing and watching her novellas, but most of all she loved working. Carolina worked for Bill Nakayama and Pandol Farms. She was always very proud of how she had started as a laborer and worked her way up to the position of foreman. Carolina purchased a gas station and converted the property into apartments, owned rentals and other properties. In 1981, she sold all her properties in Delano and retired to Santa Ana. In her later years, Carolina was able to spend her summers in Bakersfield, and winters in Santa Ana. The last few years of her life were spent at the Pacific Haven Health Center of Garden Grove. Carolina was preceded in death by her parents, Jesus and Margarita, and two of her own children, both named Mike (one at three months and another stillborn). She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Alice Ramirez; daughters and sons-in-law, Adeline and Rudy Ortega, Vera and Joe Reyes, Olivia and Luciano Castro; fourteen grandchildren; and thirty great-grandchildren. Services will be held on October 5, 2004 at Guadalupe Church, 1015 Clinton, Delano, CA, by Father Beirs. Pallbearers will be Frank Jr. and Ronald Ramirez, Rudy Ortega Jr., Ruben and Darrell Duran, and Gary Castro. Honorary pallbearers will be Darrick Duran, Greg Castro and Ryan Ortega. Mass and Rosary will begin at 9:00 a.m. with graveside services immediately following at North Kern Cemetery, 627 Austin, in Delano. A reception will be held immediately following services at Guadalupe Church. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
