He later returned to the states for pilot training, ending up at Gardner Field in Taft, CA, where he was an instructor. It was there he met his future wife, Ruth Rowell. After a short courtship, they were married in the Chapel of Gardner Field, a marriage that lasted 60 years. Shortly after that he was sent to England. He flew a C-47 transport plane, towing gliders and dropping paratroopers. He was shot down behind the German lines, but escaped and walked back to our lines and was met by three men who saluted him they were Eisenhower, Churchill and Montgomery, one of his greatest memories. He retired as a Captain after the war. For a short time after the war, he wrote arrangements for different swing bands including Charlie Barnett and Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, then a short career as an escrow officer in Riverside, chicken farmer in Cuyama and an ag- chemical business in Delano. He finally found the job that was made for him teaching. He taught Biology for many years at McFarland High School and a short time at North High in Bakersfield. He had fond memories of his time in McFarland, especially his students. While he was at Cal Poly, his daughter, Patricia was born, and three years later his son, Christopher was born in Bakersfield. He adored his two grandchildren, Heidi Snider and Zachary Boone. He was so happy getting to know his great-granddaughters, Veronica, Zoë, and Elizabeth Snider. Carl was a fascinating man and a true gentleman. He had many interests. Hed rather be fishing than anything, especially deep-sea. He was an avid coin collector, especially Ancient Roman coins and the history that went with it. He collected first editions, finding them all over the world. His favorite sport was boxing. He spent many hours growing Bonzai trees. But his biggest passion was for Ham radio. His call sign was WB6VIN. You could always find his house by the enormous antenna on his roof! His aim was to talk to every country in the world, and he reached that goal before the year 2000. He talked to thousands of people one was Tom Christian on Pitcairn Island. He finally got to meet him. Another was Jim Jones of the Peoples Temple in Jonestown, Guyana, just before the mass suicide. Another passion was traveling. He and Ruth traveled extensively in the United Kingdom, Europe, Eastern Europe and Hawaii, besides a yearly trip to Oregon to visit their granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Patty; his parents, Carl and Bertha Boone; his sister, Ruth (Sr. Mary Michael); his brother-in-law, John Rowell and his in-laws, Jack and Helen Rowell.
