The Bakersfield Californian 
Harold Francis Clifton
1912 - 2004

Born in New Jersey, the eldest son of a family of 5 which relocated to Long 
Beach, California where he met his wife Eva. He served as a lieutenant in the 
Navy during WWII stationed in the Philippines as a code breaker. After the war 
he moved his family to Bakersfield where he began his accounting career as an 
auditor for the states Franchise Tax Board. He soon went into private practice 
with the firm of Culiton/Clifton and attained his CPA by attending night 
school at USC. He went out on his own for approximately 15 years and then went 
to work for Hopper, Inc. as controller. Following the closing of Hopper, he 
went on to continue working into his late eighties as a part owner of Victor 
Leasing, Inc. Along the way he handled many trusts and served on various 
boards; two of which were the Bakersfield Californian and Green Frog Market. 
Harold was the epitome of a straight shooter and was loved by many. Following 
the death of his wife Eva in February 2004, all he wanted was to be with her; 
he got his wish and we know he is happy now. 

He is survived by his two sons Craig and spouse Molly, and Dale and spouse 
Carol; as well as four grandchildren and their spouses Brian and Dawn Clifton, 
Kelley Franey, Mikin and Brian McClanahan, and Kevin Clifton; and 6 great-
grandchildren, Brooke McClanahan, Kendall Franey, Sydney McClanahan, Peyton 
Franey, Ashely Clifton and Megan Clifton. We will all miss him, but it truly 
was his time.
