Wood April 30, 1912 October 5, 2004 Services: Fri., Oct. 8, 2:30 p.m. Born April 30, 1912, in Russell, Arkansas to Alfonsus and Hettie Wood and passed away October 5, 2004, in Bakersfield. He is preceded in death by his brother, Jim Wood; sisters, Ruby Snowden and Opal Cole. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mayselle; son, Don Wood and wife, Cathy of Bakersfield and Kenneth Wood and wife, Tina of Colorado Springs; daughter, Patricia Haynes and husband, Ray of Rendondo Beach; grandchildren, Darren Wood and wife, Wendy of Woodbridge, Virginia, Blake Wood of Bakersfield, Heather Taylor and husband, David of Bakersfield, Lisa Hand and husband, Todd of Colorado Springs, Brent Wood of Colorado Springs, Bryan Duvall and wife, Chris of San Diego and Diana McCarty and husband, Jason of New Zealand; and great-grandkids, Jacob, Noah, Kylie, Keegan, Zachary, Alisa and Brittanie. He has been a resident of Bakersfield since 1950 when he gave up farming in Arkansas and moved his family to Bakersfield and went to work in the oilfields. He worked many years for Bob Doe Oilfield Production retiring in 1977. After retiring he was able to do some fishing and he and his wife were able to do a lot of traveling to the Middle East, Europe and the British Isles. He was a veteran of WWII, serving on the USS Wasp from May 1944 to June 1945. He received 9 battle stars which included the battle for the Philippines, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Dad was very proud of his family, serving his country and being a member of the Fremount High School baseball team that won the City Championship in Los Angeles in 1931. Graveside services will be held at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Park, 2739 Panama Ln., Friday, October 8, at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will begin today, October 7, at 3:00 p.m. Greenlawn Southwest Mortuary Funeral Directors Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
