Ed was born May 26, 1933, in Lincoln Park, MI, and resided in Phoenix, AZ, before coming to Bakersfield in 1973. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1953 after serving as a Shipfitter on the USS Kishwaukee during the Korean War. Ed had several different occupations in many interesting places until finding his true passion for farming. There was rarely a day that went by that you wouldnt see him out in the fields watching the harvest, counting yields and trying to figure what the heck he was going to do different next season. It was that dedication that prompted many friends to call for some farm advice or just a weekend tee time. Ed retired from King Pak Farms, Inc. in 1999 after a successful 26-year relationship with the Arnold Kirschenmann family. Ed was an avid golfer and NASCAR race fan and enjoyed his cross-country road trips with Mary. Those who were fortunate enough to know Ed know how much he loved life by his humor, his limericks and his canny ability to deliver jokes with that deep distinguished voice of his. Eds countless friendships vouch for the love, compassion, and loyalty he had for the people in his life. Like he lived his life, Ed was amazingly strong, positive and resilient up to the last moment. Big Ed, you will be missed until we see you again. Survivors include his devoted wife, Mary; daughter, Lynn and husband, Dwight Swanson, Hart, MI; and son, Len Harkins, Huntington Beach, CA; nephews, Rick and Randy Horvath and families, Salinas, CA and numerous relatives in the Midwest. We want to thank Eds caregiver and friend, Shirley Stair, Hoffman Hospice, Nurses Janie and Maritza and Dr. Ravi Patel and staff at CBCC for their support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eds name to Hoffman Hospice and the local American Cancer Society. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
