Myers Oct. 16, 1918 Oct. 12, 2004 Alvie Edward Myers was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 16, 1918 to Alvie E. and Josephine Whitestone Myers. His father was a strongman in the Barnum & Bailey Circus and died during the performance of pulling a fire engine with his teeth. Al was in his teens and he assumed the responsibility of supporting his mother and two younger sisters, all of whom preceded him in death. Al worked in the construction industry which took him to many overseas assignments such as the Aleutian Islands, Okinawa and also Alaska. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, from which he received an Honorable Discharge in 1945, he came to California and became involved in the soils engineering and foundation industry. He came to Bakersfield for a job at Hornkohl Laboratories, where he met and married his wife of 51 years, Pearl Carter Myers. After leaving Hornkohls he worked in the San Jose area and later returned to Southern California and became employed by Associated Soils Engineering, Inc. in Riverside and then in Long Beach where he served as Vice President and then as Marketing Manager for over 35 years until retiring in early 2004 at the age of 85. In addition to serving in the U.S. Army, Al also served in the United States Navy and he received his Honorable Discharge from that branch in 1962. His involvement in the U.S. Military Service also included time in the Marine Reserve Corp. So, during his life span, he served his country in three branches of the Service and was very proud of that fact. Al is survived by his wife Pearl, son James Carter and wife Joan; daughter Janeen Carter Smith and husband Randy; granddaughters Kimberly Capilla and husband John; Suzanne Guest and companion Ryan Buck; Noelle Guest and companion Dr. Jeff Gauthier; two great-granddaughters, Jennifer and Sarah Capilla; surrogate daughter Katie Miller and her husband Jay and their children Kelly and Jeff Miller; and a host of wonderful co-workers and friends. Al was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Bakersfield, and also a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Long Beach whose Pastor Kenny Bowen has been a wonderful support to the family in this trying time. Al was a faithful member of Valley Vikings Lodge of Bakersfield for many years and always enjoyed attending conventions at the District level in the LA area. He was an avid photographer and especially loved and aerial photo challenge. He frequently joked that hed still be a parachuter if Pearl had allowed it. Al was a very active member of The Society of American Military Engineers as well as the City and County Engineers Association. He also spent countless hours as a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital, for which he received numerous awards and commendations. He will be greatly missed for his terrific sense of humor and indomitable spirit and tenacity. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Als name to either of his Lutheran Churches: Emmanuel at 1900 Baker Street, Bakersfield, CA 93305 and Resurrection at 1900 Carson Street, Long Beach, CA 90807.
