Surrounded by family and friends, his departure from home was gentle and loving. Kirk was born in Butler, Penn. to Cheryl Cooper and Robert Simpson of Foxburg, Penn. and Emlenton, Penn. respectively. During his life he moved to Atlanta, Ga.; Long Beach; Chicago, Ill. and back to California in 1979. Kirk was an extraordinary person. Born prematurely, he defied all odds, survived his twin brother, Robin, and flourished. In spite of quadriplegia from cerebral palsy, Kirk was an inspiration to everyone who met him, including celebrities such as Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Waylon Jennings and Lynn Redgrave. Kirk was without guile, loved unconditionally, possessed a wicked sense of humor, forgave those who hurt him and, as his sister Lori said, “taught us to understand that goodness transcends our bodies and happiness does not require as much effort as we all think.” He loved football, baseball, plays, concerts, chocolate pie, pickles and women. He rarely missed performances of the Tehachapi Community Theatre. Mostly, he loved hanging out with his friends and family. Kirk was preceded in death by his brother, Robin Christopher Simpson; grandma, Alice Naughton Thompson; uncle, Jon Darrell Thompson; and several friends. He is survived and missed by his mom, Ruby; dad, A. Franz Witte of Port Townsend, Wash.; sister, Alice Naughton Witte Duehring, brother-in-law Jeremy, and niece Cooper Naughton Witte, all of Mountain View; sister, Anna Witte Cusick, brother-in-law David and nephew Trace Anthony Cusick, all of Goose Creek, S.C.; sister, Lori Kennedy, brother-in-law Gerald Hamilton and nephew Jordan Kennedy Hamilton; plus many sad and loving friends.
