Hawk Jr. A private, family gathering is planned for William Stannard Hawk Jr. who passed away October 22, 2004. Bill was born on May 26, 1912, in Memphis Tennessee. His early childhood was spent in Oklahoma and Dallas, Texas. He later attended New Mexico Military Institute where he became a member of the intercollegiate polo team. Bill could regal you with stories of his polo playing years with Will Rogers and his son, Jim Rogers who remained a lifelong friend. It was during these years that he met and married his wife of sixty- six years, Aldean Hawk. Bill served his country during WWII in the 11th Cavalry and later in the Alaska Defense Command. As he entered civilian life in 1946, Bill became an automobile dealer with General Motors, opening his first automobile dealership in Puyallup, Washington. In 1954, he moved his family to Bakersfield, California, where he assumed ownership of the Oldsmobile dealership. He successfully operated Hawk Oldsmobile until his retirement in 1974. During those years, he was active in several civic groups, one of the most memorable being the first committee to head the original Convention Bureau of Bakersfield. Retirement years led Bill into a new career as a nature photographer specializing in wildflowers and hummingbirds. Many an hour was spent with his camera buddies from the Bakersfield Camera Club where the stories were as colorful as the pictures. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. We will remember him as special and will retell those marvelous stories for many years to come. We take our comfort from the fact that there are no more tears at the gate; he's dancing with Mamma and Jesus. What a glorious picture! His children, Bill Hawk and Terri Gibson, their spouses, his precious grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as a niece, Marcie Maxwell Andrews, survive Bill. No services are planned.
