Derr was born on November 3, 1937, in Altadena, CA. She was the first-born child of Paul and Esther Still. She departed this life, surrounded by her loved ones, in the early hours of October 19, 2004, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She graduated from San Fernando High School in 1955 and married the love of her life, Newton W. Derr. After raising their four children, she went back to school, becoming first an LVN, then later an RN, and eventually receiving her national certification in Critical Care Nursing. Her distinguished nursing career spanned more than 30 years and served many area hospitals, including 16 years at Kern Valley Healthcare District. She was also a Nursing Educator at both Kern Valley Hospital and Cerro Coso College. She especially enjoyed teaching because it gave her the opportunity to pass on her knowledge to others. She was an active member of Kernville United Methodist Church, and drew much strength and comfort from the loving support of her wonderful church family. She was a talented artist and writer. She had a beautiful singing voice, and sang on the radio when she was younger. She loved to dance, especially with her favorite partner, Newt. She also loved to cook, and was well known for her culinary skills. She will be remembered for her tremendous talent and intellect, her frank and forthright manner, her unwavering support and unconditional love for family and friends, her irreverent sense of humor and radiant smile, and for her inspiring strength, courage, and indomitable spirit. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, and by her beloved husband, Newton, in 1993. She is survived by her brother, Robert Still and wife, Betty of Southlake; sister, Nancy Wells and husband, Jack of Washington; sister, Sherry Blankenship of Washington; sister, Susie DePietro and husband, John of Sylmar, CA; son, Daniel Derr and Sheri Mercier of Kernville; son, David Derr and wife, Dawn of Kernville; son, Joel Derr of Bakersfield; daughter, Jamie Derr of Lake Isabella; grandchildren, Stephanie, Heather, Kristin, David, Wendy, Chelsea, Emalee, and Diana; one great-grandchild; best friend, Merrily Henstra and numerous family and friends.
