"Norm" Hall Sept. 1932 Oct. 2004 Norman Hall, a resident of North Bakersfield, died peacefully at home after a valiant battle with cancer. He was 72 years old. A native of Bakersfield, Norm graduated from Standard School & Bakersfield High School. While attending Bakersfield College, he enlisted in the Naval Reserve and was called to active duty in 1951. He served for two years as radioman with the Admirals Group on the battleships USS Missouri, USS Iowa and USS New Jersey off the Korean coast. Upon his discharge, he worked for California Television and KBAK-TV in Bakersfield and then in Hollywood and Burbank for NBC Television. In 1958, he returned to Bakersfield as Engineer for KERO-TV, where he met his wife, Gloria. After serving as Studio Supervisor, he served as Director of Engineering until his retirement in 1997 after 39 years with KERO. While working at KERO, he taught in the electronics program at Bakersfield College. Since boyhood, Norm had been an active amateur radio operator as W6JOD an interest he shared with his father, his mother and his brother. He served as President of the Kern County Radio Club and of the Bakersfield Engineers Club. He was also an active board member of The Sons In Retirement #178. An avid gardener and a lover of books, Norm was serving his second term as President of Kern County Friends of the Library at the time of his death. For 23 years, he and Gloria square-danced with the Skirts and Flirts and round-danced with the Happy Rounders. Norm was the son of Edward E. and Ethel Mae Hall of Oildale. In addition to his wife, Gloria, Norm is survived by three children: Lonnie and his wife, Jennifer of Santa Barbara, CA; Anita and her husband, Steven of Calibasas, CA; and Timothy of Ash Grove, MO. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Brennan, Matt and Michael, and by his brother H. Robert Hall of La Jolla, CA; and his sisters, Elizabeth Hall of New York, Ellen Salle of Dallas, and Grace Yates of Orangevale, CA. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 13, at 11:00 a.m., in the chapel of the First Congregational Church, at Stockdale Hwy. and Real Road. Norm will be laid to rest in Ash Grove, Missouri, near the family farm. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that friends contribute to Kern County Friends of the Library at P.O. Box 2622, Bakersfield, CA 93303 or the American Cancer Society at 1523 California Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93304.
