Verne was born July 19, 1938 in Webster City, Iowa to Verne and Margaret Black. He was the youngest child of three. After graduating high school he enlisted in the Unites States Air Force. He served two tours in Vietnam with the Intelligence Operations Units. He retired after 21 years, serving his country on almost every continent. He met and married Georgia Erbs in 1958 in Inglewood, CA. They were married for 29 years, before her death in 1987 after battling cancer. They were the parents of six sons and one daughter. He brought his youngest 3 children to Bakersfield after retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1979. He worked as a Manager, a Teacher, a Sheriffs Aide and a Reserve Deputy. He retired from the Sheriffs Department in 1997. He later settled in Lake Isabella with his daughter and son-in-law. Vern passed away Sunday October 31, 2004 after a short and hard-fought battle with colon cancer. He is preceded in death by his wife, Georgia; parents, Verne and Margaret Black and sister, Marlene. He is survived by his son, John and daughter-in-law, Julie; son, David and daughter-in-law, Theresa; son, Curt and daughter-in-law, Glenda; son, Steven Black; daughter, Susan Smith and son- in-law, Sam; son, Jeff and daughter-in-law, Victoria; son, Dennis and daughter- in-law, Tina. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and numerous great- grandchildren. The family would like to thank the many nurses of Memorial Hospital, especially the ICU Department, who worked so hard to help our father.
