On November 28, 1925, Narva Lee was born in Sherman, Texas. Her father and mother, may they rest in peace were Ira Thomas and Mabel Lauderdale. Her grandparents, James Kelly and Ida Nichols Lauderdale in Texas reared Narva Lee through her schooling until she migrated to Bakersfield, California in 1942. There she met, then Russell Dorsey Grimes, Jr., and they married February 25, 1945. They were devoted to each other and cared for each other until her passing. Their 60-year union produced three children, nineteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Narva Lee and her husband were blessed to build their own home, rear their children, educate them and see their whole family at peace and in prosperity. Narva Lee has always actively worked for Almighty God in spiritual and humanistic endeavors. She worked to uplift young people, beginning with her children and their friends through the Church of God in Christ, Order of Eastern Star, Parent Teachers Association, National Council of Negro Woman, Muslim Girls Training/General Civilization Class, and as an employee of the Bakersfield City School District. Narva Lees career on this earth ended on November 3, 2004. We all come from Allah, and we all must return to Allah. Her involvements were in Islam and Christianity. She praised and gave thanks to Almighty God and was a most loved and respected woman. She leaves behind, her loving husband of 60 years, Saleem Muslim Omar (Russell Grimes, Jr.); sisters, Martha, may she rest in peace, Minyan, Mary Lou, Carolyn and Linda; two brothers, Ira and Billy. She also leaves her children and their spouses, Sameerah M. Mateen, Ruscel Reader (Robert Reader), and Russell D. Grimes III (June Grimes); sisters-in-law, Shirley Phillips, Barbara Grimes, and Larcenia Taylor (James Taylor); nineteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends. Viewing and visitation will begin on Sunday, November 7, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. with an hour of meditation to be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ruckers Mortuary.
