Pastor Norman Slert will officiate, along with Pastor Emeritus David Newquist. A reception will follow in the Assembly Room upstairs (elevator access available). Lou was born Clara Louise Hunt on June 2, 1925 in Bakersfield, daughter of the late Hugh Hamilton Richard 'Dick' Hunt and the late Emma Barris Dopkins Hunt. She died after a brief but debilitating illness on October 21. Except for her college years at UCLA and four years in the San Francisco Bay area, Lou lived in Bakersfield her entire life. She was blessed by the love of many friends and had been involved in a variety of community affairs. For nearly sixty years, she enjoyed monthly luncheon gatherings of a bridge club, whose members remain her longest-standing friends. Lou loved music, playing both the oboe and clarinet, and participated in the Kern Philharmonic Orchestra and the Diablo Valley Symphony. Lou taught school in the Beardsley, Fairfax, and Panama districts, and later taught students from the Panama District in their homes, when illness or physical handicap prevented them from attending school. For a number of years, Lou also volunteered as a teacher of English for the Kern County Adult Literacy Council. In her later years, her community involvement was increasingly focused around her church family at First Presbyterian. She was a consistent and fervent prayer warrior, holding up the concerns of many before God. The youngest of three children, with two older brothers, Lou enjoyed the outdoors. She was the marbles champion at Horace Mann School and, as a young adult, enjoyed dove hunting. Foggy winter days often found Lou traipsing about old fields, seeking edible wild mushrooms. In the days before air-conditioning was the norm, Lou enjoyed many a summer day and night at the rustic family cabin in Kings Canyon National Park, built by her grandfather, George Dopkins of Dinuba in the early part of the last century. Lou was in the first freshman class at the then brand new East Bakersfield High School in 1938, but after moving to La Cresta as a teen, graduated from Bakersfield (Kern County Union) High School in 1942. She graduated from UCLA with a degree in Psychology in 1946. Ever since, she remained a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and the UCLA Alumni Association. Lou married Walter Bonnard Snook, II, of Maricopa in 1947, who preceded her in death in 1974. She is survived by her two loving sons and their wives, John and Maureen Snook of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and Jim and Linda Snook of Santa Cruz. She was blessed by seven grandchildren, John-Paul Craig Snook, Walter Robert Snook, Alice Louise Inge Snook, Mary Edythe Snook, Christina Marie Snook, John Kerstetter Snook, and Christopher Bonnard Snook. Lou also is survived by her brother, Richard Hunt of Fresno, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Gerald Hunt of Bakersfield. Now she, too, will be deeply missed. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution do so to First Presbyterian Church of Bakersfield or their favorite charity.
