She also received loving care at The Samaritans. The family wishes to thank Bucky and his staff for all their efforts to make her life comfortable. Born in Clarinda, Iowa, in 1912, Lela grew up on a family farm. Her experiences on a farm in rural Iowa were important to her, and she often reminisced about them. She attended Maryville Teachers College in Missouri, but had to interrupt her education because of the Depression. She finally completed her studies with a B.A. in Education at San Francisco State University thirty years later. In 1932 she married George Pitman in North Platte, Nebraska, and then later moved to Denver, Colorado. There, her two children were born: Larry Pitman, current resident of Bakersfield, and Lois Pitman, now living in San Francisco. In 1944 the family moved to California. After a period as a homemaker, Lela resumed her career as a teacher. She taught for thirty years in Richmond and Union City, California. After retirement, Lelas time was devoted to collecting antiques, needlework, watching tennis on television and reading her mystery novels. She is survived by her son, Larry; daughter, Lois; Marialuisa Figueroa, Claudia Pereyra and two grandsons, Andrew Pitman of San Francisco and Jonathan Pitman of Pinole, California. Consistent with her wishes, there will be no service and her remains will be interred in the family crypt in Hayward, California.
