Smith Services: Friday, Nov. 12, 10 a.m. Sally A. Smith, 63, went to be with her Heavenly Father on November 6, 2004. Sally was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a mother-in-law, a friend, a colleague, and a mom away-from-home for many of her sons friends. Sally was born March 1, 1941 in Alameda, California. As a child she lived in Chicago, IL, Cheyenne, WY, and York, Nebraska. At the age of 9 she returned to California with her mother and settled in Bakersfield. In 1955 she met Robert Smith during a church hayride (those hayrides get you every time). For the next seven years Sally and Robert dated until they married on March 3, 1962. Sally attended Bakersfield High School and graduated in 1959. After graduating from high school, Sally went to Bakersfield College and completed the nursing program. In 1972, after giving birth to her three sons, she went to work at Mercy Hospital where she was an employee for 32 years. At the age of 55, believing it is never too late to learn, Sally enrolled at the University of Laverne. While working full time at Mercy Hospital, Sally completed her schooling during evenings and on weekends. In 2000, at the age of 59, she proudly graduated with a BS in Health Organization Management. Friends and family will always remember Sally for her incredible strength, her optimistic attitude, her thankful spirit, her concern for others, and her incredible faith. In spite of dealing with cancer for over 20 years, when asked about her well being Sally would respond I'm fine! Sally had a strong faith in a loving God and found her strength through prayer. Her sons, Scott, Mark, and David, tell stories of their Mom wrestling them to the ground to steal kisses. This was especially incredible considering the boys were teenagers and often in the presence of their friends. Sally loved sports of all kinds. She spent years watching her boys participate in baseball, wrestling, and soccer. She also enjoyed dragging her reluctant husband to Renegade football games. Sally is survived by her husband of 42 years, Robert Smith; her three sons, Scott, Mark, and David; her grandchildren, Mark Jr., Amy, Darryl, Nathan, and Shaila; her mother-in-law, Lena Smith; and her daughter-in-law, Mary Smith. Because of her faith in Jesus, Sally is in Heaven with her Heavenly Father. Sally requested that her memorial service be a celebration of her life and not the mourning of her death. On Friday, November 12, a celebration of Sally's life will take place at First Presbyterian Church, at 10:00 a.m. Graveside services will follow. It is Sally's wish that bright cheerful clothes be worn in place of the traditional mourning clothes. The family would like to thank all of Sally's friends for their outpouring of love and their unending offers of support. In lieu of flowers, it is Sally's wish that donations be made to the Florence Wheeler Cancer Center or the American Cancer Society.
