He was born on Nov. 19, 1928 in Bassett, Neb. He was raised and worked on a cattle ranch until entering the United States Army in 1951. Charles was a veteran of the Korean War, having served a tour in 1951 and 1952. After being honorably discharged, he returned to ranching. He came to California in 1956 and began a career with the Southern Pacific Railroad that lasted 34 years. In 1963, Charles married Daisy Tolle and legally adopted her four children, Shane, Vickie, Kim and Jamie. They later had a son, Tony. Charles raised all the children as if they were his own. He said that when he married Daisy he also married the children. The family settled in Tehachapi in 1971. Charles saw his children grow up, graduate, get married and have children of their own. Charles was an excellent piano player who enjoyed entertaining people. He loved family gatherings. He had a long-held passion for writing and contributed countless letters to opinion pages of area newspapers. Charles is survived by his wife of 41 years, Daisy of Tehachapi; sons, Shane Kramer and wife Bridgette of San Luis Obispo, Tony Kramer of San Diego; daughters, Vickie Petrie of Clearlake, Kim Kramer of Bakersfield, Jamie Perry and husband Russell of Bakersfield; sister, Emily Spellman of Stockton; brothers, Francis Kramer of Bassett, Neb. and Bernard Kramer of Andover, Kan. Charles also leaves 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren whom he adored and who adored him, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be held on Monday, Nov. 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Wood Family Funeral Chapel in Tehachapi.
