Grady was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Lucy Jane Johnson, on December 6, 2003; and a son, Johnnie Darold Johnson. He is survived by 8 children, Grady F. Johnson, Raymond L. Johnson, Janice Walker, Gwen Carr, Donnie H. Johnson, Ralph W. Johnson, Patricia A. Johnson, and Karen Johnson; a brother, Walter Johnson, thirteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Grady has lived in Bakersfield since 1952. Grady and Lucy were members of the Cain Memorial A.M.E. Church for over 50 years where Grady once served as Superintendent of Sunday School. He worked in construction as a Cement Mason Foreman for over 40 years until he retired in 1972. He was a standing member of the Cement Masons Local 600. He started his own gardening service in 1973 and continued until 1993 at age 82. He instilled this diligent work ethic in all his children. He took great pride in his work, his family, his home, his immaculate appearance, and most importantly, his faith in God. Our family would like to thank all of the caretakers who so kindly assisted with Grady, including Agape In Home Care, Hoffman Hospice, Alzheimers Disease Association, Benika Bradshaw and Drachelle Godbolt. His call to home leaves our family with another void, but it is comforting to know Grady is again with Lucy, and they shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Service for the Celebration of the life of Grady Ralph Johnson will be held at Cain Memorial A.M.E. Church, 630 California Avenue, Bakersfield, CA 93304 on Saturday, November 13, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd., Bakersfield, CA 93306.
