He was raised in Oklahoma and served in the U.S. Army in Europe. James moved to Buttonwillow, CA in 1947 and married the former Norma Andreotti in 1948. He started his lifelong farming career in Buttonwillow in 1954. He later farmed in the Shafter and Wasco areas. The family moved from Buttonwillow to the Semitropic area in 1964, then Wasco in 1982. He sold his last parcel of land and went into retirement in 2001. James was involved in many civic, business and school organizations throughout his lifetime. These included American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Calcot Executive Board of Directors, founding member of the Kimberlina Co-op Gin, Board of Directors of Ranchers Cotton Oil, member of both the Semi-tropic School Board and the Wasco High School Board for many years. He was named the Wasco Chamber of Commerce Farmer of the Year in 1989. James developed a love for girls softball when his two younger daughters started playing the sport. He was a coach and father figure for many of the young softball players, and continued to be a mentor to them throughout his life. He taught many of the girls how to pitch, both in summer leagues and at the varsity level. He was very proud that the high school teams he coached won numerous league championships and two consecutive valley championships. He also supported many teams in softball, soccer, and little league as a team sponsor. He is survived by Norma, his wife of 56 years; his daughters, Rosemarie Berg and her husband, Chuck, Tamara Payne, Stephanie Hart and her husband, Cliff; grandchildren, Jason Berg and wife, Alyson, Brian Berg, Elizabeth, Sean, and Kassie Hart; great-grandchild, Emily Berg; sister-in-law, Quintelia Romanini as well as many loving nieces and nephews. James believed in the Golden Rule of Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. He lived by this rule both in his personal life and in the business world. Honorary Pallbearers will be Roy Romanini, Mike Hankins, Tom Proffitt, Paul Spolsdoff, Dave Swisshelm, Art Torigiani, and Delbert Williams. James also wanted to add a special rememberance to the late Deno Fanucchi. Memorial service will be held at Christ Community Church, 1079 F Street, in Wasco on Saturday, November 13, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Optimal Hospice, 4800 Stockdale Hwy. #215, Bakersfield, CA 93309-2636, or the charity of your choice.
