Robert was the only child of Irma June Miller and James Albert Orwig. He attended primary schools in Ohio. He credits his father and his Aunt Hazel with teaching him the Refinements of Life. He was drafted into the Army of the United States in January 1943. Robert served three tours of Duty for our great nation. Stationed at Camp Perry Ohio, he went to France on December 12, 1944 on the US West Point, an 80,000 ton converted cruise liner. He was honorably discharged after serving three years and one day. He moved to Saratoga, CA in 1946, working in the dairy industry. He began his higher education in 1950 at San Jose State University majoring in Elementary Education. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1953. He received his Masters Degree from Stanford University in 1956. He attended USC and was admitted to the Doctrine program for which he completed all course work with only his dissertation left to complete. After six years in the classroom, he became Vice Principal then Principal and later Director of Personnel for Franklin-McKinley School District. In 1969 he was Director of Instruction for Live Oak School District in Santa Cruz. He was Assistant Superintendent of Instruction for the Delano Elementary School District in 1971. He met and married Shirley Buie in 1973 and became step-father to Debra, Wesley and Donald. In 1976 he was Superintendent of Waukena School District and later Superintendent of the Alpaugh Unified School District and retired in 1986. He was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Delta Kappa Honor Education Societies. He joined the Masons in 1974 and later the Scottish Rite of Bakersfield and Al Malaikah Shrine. He was a devoted teacher, father, husband and grandfather to David, Anthony, Joshua, Kirstyn and Donald Jr., (DJ). He adored and raised grandson Anthony as well as Anthonys father, Donald. He was a good Mason and served Delano Lodge 309 for more than 15 years as Secretary and behind the scenes leader. He leaves a lasting legacy of love and affection to all his family members and friends. Services will be held at Delano Mortuary on Thursday. The 18th of November 2004 at 1:00 p.m. Donations in his name may be made to the Masonic Homes of California, 1111 California Street, San Francisco, CA 94108.
