Rev. Msgr. Michael Braun will officiate and interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd. Marjorie Mary Icardo was born in Osmond, Nebraska on October 29, 1921 to John and Mary Brennan. She was the youngest of five children, John, Vincent, George and Marie, who along with her parents, all preceded in death. Marge and her family moved to Sepulveda, California where she eventually met her future husband, Jimmie Icardo, in high school. Married on November 27, 1941, the two spent a wonderful fifty-nine year life together, centered on farming, family and community, until Jimmies death in 2001. Following their marriage, they first began farming in Redding, California with Jimmies brother, Jack, and sister, Albina, and their spouses. In 1947, Jim and Marge joined many other young farm families who were beginning to settle in what was then the very desolate area of Mettler-Wheeler Ridge, south of Bakersfield. It was there where Marjories reputation began for being an outstanding cook and hostess as she and Jimmie always loved to entertain family and friends. She was also an accomplished seamstress, making many of her own clothes and creating beautiful dance costumes for daughter Yvonne. For several years, Marge, herself, participated in a dance group made up of fellow mothers whose daughters, like Yvonne, danced for Johnnie Sissons Stage Door Studio. Although Jimmie continued to farm, the family moved to Bakersfield in 1960. Along with her new home to decorate, she continued her active participation in her childrens education and activities. She was always the great cheerleader whether for Glorias horse shows, Garys trapshooting or Yvonnes dancing. She later kept the same enthusiasm for her grandchildrens sports and other activities. Marjorie had always had a interest, and natural talent in sketching, but once moved to Bakersfield, she developed her artistic ability further by art lessons; and she became quite well known for her oil paintings, often of landscapes she had first sketched on her vacations. Marge and Jimmie and their family enjoyed traveling; Augusts at Huntington or Shasta Lakes and Easter vacations at Lake Havasu were traditions they kept with several other families for many years. Even though they were on vacation, Marge still prepared the beautiful meals her family was used to. She and Jimmie later began many years of motorhoming and international travel with several good friends, especially Dave and Josie Cerrina. Along with sightseeing, the two couples had many spirited bridge games together through the years. Although Marge was not as outwardly an active participant in the community organizations as was her husband, Jimmie, she was nevertheless very proud and pleased that together they were able to help support their church, Our Lady Of Perpetual Help; Garces Memorial High School; the Bakersfield Museum of Art; and California State University Bakersfield, which named the Icardo Athletic Center in their honor. Marge was a gentle, quiet, dignified and loving women, faithful to her family and God. She was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild who survive her. Daughter Gloria Pearson and husband, Don, Glorias daughter, Gina McCormick, who recently presented Marge with her only great grandchild, Cameron; daughter Yvonne and her three children, M.J., Angelina, and Janelle; son Gary and wife Cynthia, grandson, Adam and wife Christine. Gary and Adam operate the Icardo family farming operations started by Jimmie and Marge 63 years ago. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Phyllis Icardo of Bakersfield and Betty Icardo of La Jolla, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Her family is very grateful for the wonderful care given to her by Dr. Johnson Jung, Larry Yokoyama and James Chang; the special devotion of housekeeper Rosa Dominguez, and ladies from Alternative Care. Marge succumbed to a two-year battle with lymphoma and it is suggested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in her honor to the American Cancer Society, the Youth Center at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, or to another favorite charity. Casketbeares will be Adam Icardo, Don Pearson, Ed Noriega, M.J. Gonzales, Cliff Kirschenman and Mike Molatore. Honorary Casketbearers will be Dave Cerrina, Rudy Carvajal, E.G. Berchtold, Leo Stockli, John Antonino, Bob Tucker and Dean Gay. Visitation begins Sunday at 12:00 noon at Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Blvd. Greenlawn Mortuary Funeral Directors Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ca/kern/obits/gob3033brennani.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/caobfiles/ File size: 5.6 Kb
