Sloan May 21, 1946 – Oct. 5, 2004 Services were held on Oct. 11 in Visalia for Larry Sloan, 58, of Stallion Springs, who passed away Oct. 5 in Bakersfield. Larry was born on May 21, 1946 to E.K. and Ruth Sloan in Exeter. He graduated from Mt. Whitney High School in 1964. Larry’s career started in pest control and he eventually started his own company, Sloan Pest Control, which was active in Tulare County for more than 20 years. The Alcoholics Anonymous community will miss Larry as he participated actively for many years. His efforts in visiting high schools to warn students of the potential pitfalls of alcohol use by teenagers made a positive difference. His warm, cowboy humor and colorful stories always engaged listeners to consider a serious message. He worked for the National Council of Alcoholism in Tulare. Larry was an avid team roper and a member of American Cowboys Team Roping Association, American Team Roping Association and United States Team Roping Championships. He was the ACTRA all-around team roper for 2001. Larry had just recently moved to Stallion Springs. He loved to sit out and feel the breeze from the fields as he sat on his front porch in his roping chair while watching deer run past. The local raccoon population, which he fed every night, will also miss Larry. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Irene Sloan, in 2002; his sister, Debbie Sloan, in 1961; and his father, E.K. Sloan, in 1990. Larry will be greatly missed by his three daughters, Jaylene Spivey of Visalia, Heather Sloan of Visalia and Becky Cardoso and husband Joe of Tulare. He is also survived by his mother, Ruth Sloan of Stallion Springs; sister, Lina Porter and husband Walter of Visalia; brother, Brian Sloan and wife Heidi of Tehachapi; two grandchildren, Justin and Jessica Spivey of Visalia; as well as nieces, nephews and loving friends. Donations may be made to the Tulare Branch of the National Council of Alcoholism at 525 E. Bardsley Ave., Tulare, CA 93274. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to the deceased.
