Delores was born in El Centro, California to Elzetta and Cicero Hammond, Sr. on May 26, 1937 and accepted Christ into her life at an early age. She attended elementary and junior high school in Wasco, California and high school in San Francisco, California. She moved to Bakersfield from San Francisco in 1958 with her first husband, James H. Mays where she spent her early adult life caring for her six children. When this union ended and when her children were older, Delores began attending night school and various training programs to make herself employable so that she could take better care of her family. In 1970 she was hired as a part-time intermittent clerical assistant for the State of California Disability Insurance. She later became a full-time employee and after many years on the job, she eventually became District Manager. In all she worked for the State of California for 28 years and retired in 1998. Delores spent her retirement years traveling the country, and relaxing with her husband of the last 24 years, Ertron R. Bennett. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. She was the matriarch and backbone of her family. She was known for her lively personality, the delicious foods that she prepared and for her warm and beautiful spirit. She never met a stranger and her legacy of always welcoming others at family gatherings is something that will continue to shape the lives of her family. She is survived by her husband, Ertron R. Bennett of Bakersfield; her sister, Rhea Palmer (Samuel Marshall) of Hayward, California; stepsister, Delores Rougeau of Bakersfield; brother-in-law, Alexander McCleod of Durham, North Carolina; her children, Sandra Billingsly (Donell Billingsly), Ronald Mays (Mayumi Mays), and Joel Mays (Carrie Mays) of Bakersfield, Judy Mays (Donald Miller) of Richmond, California, Martin Mays of Corcoran, California, Gregory Mays (Iyabode Manley) of Kelseyville, California; and stepson, Kervin Bennett (Sherry Bennett) of Bakersfield, California; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her father, Cicero Hammond, Sr.; mother, Elzetta Collins; sisters, Norma McKnight, Theodora McCleod, and Olive Newman; brothers, Peter Langdon, Cicero Hammond, Jr., and Theodore Hammond; uncles, Ferman and Herman Heslip and Moscow Hammond; and an infant daughter, Beverly Ann Mays. The family would like to express a special thank you to sisters-in-law, Mayumi Mays and Carrie Mays for the special care and attention shown to their mother- in-law during her illness and hospital stay.
